But what is this? You go to see a family lawyer, and they say that if you have already separated, you must transfer assets between you within the next month (ie by 5 April 2017) if you are to continue to be treated as a married couple by HMRC, and be able to transfer assets between you without it counting as a disposal which would trigger an immediate liability to pay that Capital Gains Tax (CGT). Once you are officially separated, whether you are divorced or not, you will be treated as separate people. At most, you will only have […]

(Newser) – A divorce is a hard and pricey thing to get in Mississippi, though that doesn’t necessarily stop people—one recent study found that the state’s divorce rate is seventh highest in the country. What sets it—and South Dakota—apart from the rest of the country is that without a true “no-fault” divorce law, if one spouse doesn’t want the divorce, it can be just about impossible to end a marriage. So reports USA Today in a lengthy feature on the state of divorce in Mississippi. “It made my skin crawl,” says Elizabeth Freels, one of several people the […]

However, I can disclose that the Labour peer, 77, who presented ITV’s flagship arts programme The South Bank Show for more than 30 years, has agreed a huge financial settlement with Lady Bragg, 71, that will, unusually, involve the couple remaining man and wife. ‘I would rather keep it private, but it’s true that we have agreed an amicable settlement,’ Lord Bragg tells me.  Gabriel Clare-Hunt […]
