The study, carried out by the National Observatory for Living with Dignity within the foundation, found that what students’ experience at home impacted their decision to leave school prior to obtaining the desired qualifications. “Divorce may cause the most profound, emotional trauma and leaves the biggest impact on children, particularly in low socio-economic status contexts defined by limited social and cultural capital,” the observatory’s chair Carmel Borg said. “Children […]

Humanist weddings are growing in popularity in the UK. Well, let’s be accurate… Humanist weddings are growing in popularity in Scotland. David Cameron, in his infinite wisdom, and even though he fought for gay marriage in Parliament, put the kaibosh on humanist weddings for no discernible reason. Scotland, on the other hand, has embraced humanist weddings; so much so that they are now more popular then CoS and Catholic weddings and trail only to secular civil weddings. Yay Scotland. Last year, Northern Island legally recognised them; in England and Wales, they are ‘recognised’ but carry no legal weight. C’mon! What […]

The publisher of the Mirror titles and the Sunday People has failed in a Court of Appeal bid to ensure confidential sources are protected in the disclosure of call records as part of phone-hacking litigation. Mirror Group Newspapers applied to the High Court in March last year to amend the “early disclosure” regime, which means it must provide phone-hacking claimants with call data in relation to them and four nominated friends or family members, known as associates. A new study has found that people who marry in Humanist ceremonies are three times less likely to get divorced. Humanist ceremonies, which are legally recognised in Scotland and Northern Ireland, are non-religious and more flexible than civil or register office ceremonies. Humanists UK say that, ‘a humanist, non-religious wedding ceremony gives you the opportunity to marry where you want, when you want and how you want. There’s no set script: it’s too personal an occasion for that. You can set the tone that’s right for you.’ The study used figures obtained from the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service as […]

The court has ruled in favour of claimants in a battle over medical agency fees that affects thousands of low-value personal injury cases. Ruling in Beardmore v Lancashire CC in Liverpool County Court earlier this month, Judge Graham Wood QC rejected the defendant’s attack on the recoverability of agency fees charged for obtaining medical records in employers’ and public liability cases that have exited the portal process and fall under CPR 45.29I. The dispute arose from a straightforward tripping claim that settled for £3,500 after leaving the portal. The defendant agreed to pay the relevant fixed legal costs and the […]

You can overcome your fears if you learn to listen to them differently. When the Kansas tornado picked up Dorothy’s house and whisked it off to Munchkinland, she was naturally afraid. And feeling scared of life after divorce isn’t much different, really. Marriage, with all its imperfections and frustrations, is the thing you “know”. Or at least you think you do. It’s the “Auntie Em”, the point on your compass that you at least recognize. And familiarity is comforting — even, ironically, when it’s uncomfortable. Whether or not you wanted to end your marriage, divorce represents the tornado that can […]
