The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in London hit 27,416 on 19 June, with Croydon the worst affected borough.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Figures released by Public Health England<\/a> showed that the borough had recorded 1,532 confirmed Covid-19 cases as of the end of last week, while Brent has had 1,497.<\/p>\n

Barnet and Bromley have recorded 1,315 and 1,291 positive tests respectively.<\/p>\n

Southwark had the fifth most London coronavirus cases with 1,283.<\/p>\n

London had zero coronavirus deaths on Sunday 21 June, which is the second time this has happened since the beginning of the lockdown on 23 March.<\/p>\n

The capital has had about nine per cent of the UK\u2019s 305,289 confirmed cases.<\/p>\n

The official number of people in the UK to have died of coronavirus has now reached 42,647.<\/p>\n

Shielding rules to be eased across UK<\/h2>\n

It comes as the government announced on Monday that more than 2m vulnerable people will be able to leave their homes for the first time in over three months.<\/p>\n

Advisory guidance for more than 2.2m people who are currently shielding indoors will be eased from 6 July to match that of the wider population, as virus infection rates continue to fall across the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vulnerable people will be able to meet in groups of up to six people outdoors and form \u201csupport bubbles\u201d with another household, the Department of Health and Social Care said, meaning families will at last be reunited with parents and grandparents following months of lockdown.\u00a0<\/p>\n

From 1 August, shielding advice will be dropped altogether. However, clinically vulnerable people will be encouraged to take reasonable precautions, and will retain their priority for supermarket delivery slots.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The clinically extremely vulnerable \u2014 which includes those aged\u00a070 and over, pregnant women, and people with an underlying medical condition \u2014 have been unable to leave their homes since the lockdown was introduced on 23 March.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the daily Number 10 press conference, health secretary Matt Hancock said he would write to each person on the shielding list, adding that the government would work closely with councils and employers to ensure a smooth transition for the clinically vulnerable.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy message to employers is crystal clear: please work with us to ease the transition back for shielding employees,\u201d he added.\u00a0\u201cWe expect you to do the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

UK borrowing surges to a record \u00a3103.7bn in lockdown<\/h2>\n

It comes as data revealed that UK borrowing exploded to \u00a3103.7bn over April and May\u2019s lockdown, as debt exceeded 100 per cent as a percentage of GDP in May for the first time in 57 years.<\/p>\n

The current financial year to date \u2013 April to May 2020 \u2013 has already seen borrowing rocket to \u00a3103.7bn. That is \u00a387bn more than in the same months last year.<\/p>\n

And UK debt rose by 20.5 percentage points to \u00a31.95 trillion last month, an increase of \u00a3173.2 billion compared to May 2019, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said today.<\/p>\n

That saw debt hit 100.9 per cent as a percentage of GDP, exceeding 100 per cent for the first time since 1963.<\/p>\n

Borrowing excluding public sector banks hit \u00a355.2bn for May alone, nine times more than the year before, and easily the highest month since records began in 1993.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
