A multi-million dollar fund paid by tobacco companies was set up for Floridians and their survivors who suffered illnesses due to cigarette smoking from 1994-2006. The class action in 2008 was estimated to include 700,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys across Florida represented clients who believed they qualified for a portion of the fund.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, cases filed collectively by Jacksonville attorneys Charlie Farah and Norwood Wilner\u00a0prompted a U.S. Attorney Special Master seven month investigation into possible misconduct in 2012.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The investigation revealed some cases filed by the attorneys were for deceased clients, non-smokers, those who did not suffer from one of the required diseases, and 572 that did not authorize the attorneys to file lawsuits on their behalf.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the order, the lawyers explained that after 10-15 years of preparing thousands of tobacco cases, some clients were deceased or unreachable once the case went to court.<\/p>\n<p>The Court sanctioned Wilner and Farah as principles for each firm and recommended a Florida Bar investigation into any violations of ethics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Wilner\u00a0and Farah] are held to account for the immense waste of judicial resources and contempt shown for the judicial process occasioned by maintaining over a thousand non-viable claims,&#8221; the order reads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a result of their actions, other litigants faced increased delays as the Court had to divert its attention to cleaning up the mess that was the Engle docket.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>First Coast News reached out to Eddie Farah for comment on this story, but we haven&#8217;t heard back.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 2017 WTLV-TV<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\/news\/apiclick.aspx?ref=FexRss&#038;aid=&#038;tid=8AC0AC0BD4054E7F9994DF2E978D7B77&#038;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.firstcoastnews.com%2Fnews%2Flocal%2Flaw-firm-farah-farah-sanctioned-9-million-by-federal-court-over-tobacco-litigation%2F484636845&#038;c=10798061358557007852&#038;mkt=en-gb\">Source link <\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/contact-us\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/footer-300x100.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"200\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/footer-300x100.png 300w, https:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/footer-150x50.png 150w, https:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/footer.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First Coast News , WTLV 7:01 PM.
