No one guessed I had a problem<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"inline-content story left\">\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2010-11-17\/corporate-watchdog-cracks-down-on-cfd-advertising\/2340828\"><strong>Related Story:<\/strong>&#13;<br \/>\n       Corporate watchdog cracks down on CFD advertising<\/a><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>An online trading platform allowing users to place bets on the fluctuating price of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, commodities and shares is facing a possible class action overseas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-content audio right\">\n<p>      <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radionational\/programs\/backgroundbriefing\/cryptocurrency\/9058476\" class=\"inline-caption\"><strong>Audio:<\/strong>&#13;<br \/>\n          Betting on bitcoin: The risky world of cryptocurrency<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"source\">(Background Briefing)<\/span>&#13;<br \/>\n      <\/a><\/div>\n<p>The company, Plus500, is listed on the London Stock Exchange and operates internationally through subsidiaries in Australia, New Zealand, Cyprus, Israel, and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Giambrone, the European law firm preparing the group litigation, said it had interviewed several hundred people who traded through Plus500 in the United Kingdom and lost their money in what it claimed were &#8220;unfair circumstances&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have more than 600 people who got in touch with us, and we&#8217;ve managed to turn 30 per cent into actual claims,&#8221; Luca Salerno, a lawyer with the firm, said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--pullquote\">\n<p>&#8220;Each client lost $10,000, typically, within a timeframe of a couple of months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr Salerno accused Plus500 of &#8220;rigging the platform&#8221; by failing to action its customers&#8217; bets or positions in a timely manner \u2014 an allegation the company denied.<\/p>\n<h2>How difference contracts work<\/h2>\n<p>Plus500 provides contracts for difference, meaning its customers do not own the underlying assets (cryptocurrencies, shares, commodities), but instead speculate on changes in their market value.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Salerno said the company essentially &#8220;builds a delay on purpose&#8221; into betting transactions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let&#8217;s say I make a bet today on Bitcoin going up,&#8221; Mr Salerno said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[Plus500] would say, &#8216;By the time we managed to execute the transaction, Bitcoin went down again.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said that &#8220;flies in the face&#8221; of market regulations on transaction execution.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to adhere to these rules \u2014 as set out by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK \u2014 can result in penalties.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;More like gambling than trading&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Plus500 has also been criticised by customers who say the platform will often shut down at inconvenient times, preventing them from capitalising on advantageous movements in markets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To be honest, I feel that was deliberate because it didn&#8217;t happen just once,&#8221; Yousif Sadik, who traded through Plus500 in London, said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it was a one-off \u2026 you could kind of understand it. They can basically disable the instrument whenever they want,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"quote--pullquote\">\n<p>&#8220;You should be able to open and close positions as you please, but this is not how it works.
