{"id":179184,"date":"2022-05-07T11:36:29","date_gmt":"2022-05-07T11:36:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/blog\/?p=179184"},"modified":"2022-05-07T11:36:29","modified_gmt":"2022-05-07T11:36:29","slug":"thousands-could-risk-pension-poverty-after-divorce-as-average-age-of-separation-rises-to-record-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/blog\/thousands-could-risk-pension-poverty-after-divorce-as-average-age-of-separation-rises-to-record-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands could risk pension poverty after divorce, as average age of separation rises to record high"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"s18\">\u2022 <\/span><em><strong><span class=\"s19\">The average age of divorce is now 47 for a man and 44 for a woman<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span class=\"s18\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s19\">O<\/span><span class=\"s19\">ne in seven (<\/span><span class=\"s19\">15%<\/span><span class=\"s19\">) <\/span><span class=\"s19\">didn\u2019t realise their pension could be impacted by getting divorced<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span class=\"s18\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s19\">A<\/span><span class=\"s19\"> third <\/span><span class=\"s19\">(34%) <\/span><span class=\"s19\">made no claim on their former partner\u2019s pension<\/span> <span class=\"s19\">when they divorced<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span class=\"s18\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s19\">One in t<\/span><span class=\"s19\">welve<\/span> <span class=\"s19\">(8%) <\/span><span class=\"s19\">divorcees<\/span> <span class=\"s19\">don\u2019t have their own pension<\/span> <span class=\"s19\">and were relying on their partner to finance their retirement<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span class=\"s18\">\u2022 <\/span><span class=\"s19\">One in five <\/span><span class=\"s19\">(19%) <\/span><span class=\"s19\">divorcees<\/span> <span class=\"s19\">will be significantly <\/span><span class=\"s19\">financially <\/span><span class=\"s19\">worse off in retirement because of<\/span><span class=\"s19\"> a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s19\">divorce<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"s21\"><strong><span class=\"s22\">Latest figures from the ONS<\/span><span class=\"s23\">1<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> show that in 2020, there were<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> 103,592<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> divorces granted in England and Wales, but with a new<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> law <\/span><span class=\"s22\">that <\/span><span class=\"s22\">c<\/span><span class=\"s22\">ame<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> into force on the 6<\/span><span class=\"s23\">th<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> April 2022<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> making it<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> much <\/span><span class=\"s22\">easier <\/span><span class=\"s22\">for couples <\/span><span class=\"s22\">to get divorced<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> through a \u2018no fault\u2019<\/span> <span class=\"s22\">plea<\/span><span class=\"s23\">2<\/span><span class=\"s22\">,<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> this figure<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> is <\/span><span class=\"s22\">likely<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> to<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> increase in<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> the<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> coming years<\/span><span class=\"s22\">.<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"s21\"><span class=\"s22\">Thinking about f<\/span><span class=\"s22\">amily f<\/span><span class=\"s22\">inances may be the last thing couples want to <\/span><span class=\"s22\">do<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> at this difficult time. However, it\u2019s important to <\/span><span class=\"s22\">understand <\/span><span class=\"s22\">the impact that divorce will have on finances<\/span><span class=\"s22\">,<\/span> <span class=\"s22\">including<\/span> <span class=\"s22\">pension<\/span><span class=\"s22\">s<\/span><span class=\"s22\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s21\"><span class=\"s22\">The UK <\/span><span class=\"s22\">currently <\/span><span class=\"s22\">holds \u00a315.2 trillion pounds in household wealth<\/span><span class=\"s23\">3<\/span><span class=\"s22\">. <\/span><span class=\"s22\">Private pensions represents the biggest single component of this wealth \u2013 at a<\/span><span class=\"s22\">round<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> 42% of the<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> total<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> (\u00a36.<\/span><span class=\"s22\">4<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> trillion)<\/span><span class=\"s22\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n            <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/servedbyadbutler.com\/adserve\/;ID=179117;size=300x250;setID=435283;type=iframe;click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><br \/>\n            <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"s21\"><span class=\"s22\">Agreeing a fair separation of this pension wealth at a time of divorce will be critical to the future financial well-being <\/span><span class=\"s22\">of<\/span><span class=\"s22\"> both parties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><span class=\"s25\">As the average age for getting divorced <\/span><span class=\"s25\">hits<\/span><span class=\"s25\"> an all time high of 47 years and 5 months for men and 44 years and 9 months for women<\/span><span class=\"s23\">4<\/span><span class=\"s25\">, it\u2019s fair to assume that the levels of wealth accumulated in couples\u2019 pension pots may also be <\/span><span class=\"s25\">fairly <\/span><span class=\"s25\">high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><span class=\"s25\">However, n<\/span><span class=\"s25\">ew research from Aviva s<\/span><span class=\"s25\">uggests<\/span><span class=\"s25\"> that<\/span> <span class=\"s25\">15% of <\/span><span class=\"s25\">divorced <\/span><span class=\"s25\">people didn\u2019t realise their pension could be impacted by getting divorced<\/span> <span class=\"s25\">and <\/span><span class=\"s25\">more than a third (34%)<\/span> <span class=\"s25\">made no claim on their former partner\u2019s pension <\/span><span class=\"s25\">and it was not included as an asset in the settlement <\/span><span class=\"s25\">when they <\/span><span class=\"s25\">did <\/span><span class=\"s25\">divorce<\/span><span class=\"s25\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n            <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/servedbyadbutler.com\/adserve\/;ID=179117;size=300x250;setID=435283;type=iframe;click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" hspace=\"0\" vspace=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><br \/>\n            <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><span class=\"s25\">Worr<\/span><span class=\"s25\">y<\/span><span class=\"s25\">ingly, almost one in t<\/span><span class=\"s25\">welve<\/span><span class=\"s25\"> (8%) <\/span><span class=\"s25\">divorce<\/span><span class=\"s25\">es<\/span> <span class=\"s25\">say they <\/span><span class=\"s25\">didn\u2019t have their own pension savings as they were relying on their partner to finance their retirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><span class=\"s25\">A<\/span><span class=\"s25\">s<\/span><span class=\"s25\"> a result<\/span><span class=\"s25\"> of divorce<\/span><span class=\"s25\">,<\/span><span class=\"s25\"> as many as <\/span><span class=\"s25\">o<\/span><span class=\"s25\">ne in five (19%)<\/span> <span class=\"s25\">say they <\/span><span class=\"s25\">will <\/span><span class=\"s25\">be<\/span><span class=\"s25\">, or are, <\/span><span class=\"s25\">significantly worse off in retirement<\/span><span class=\"s25\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><span class=\"s25\">To supplement their income <\/span><span class=\"s25\">following <\/span><span class=\"s25\">a divorce, a third of <\/span><span class=\"s25\">divorce<\/span><span class=\"s25\">es<\/span> <span class=\"s25\">(32%) <\/span><span class=\"s25\">said they <\/span><span class=\"s25\">dipped into their savings<\/span><span class=\"s25\">; <\/span><span class=\"s25\">one in five (<\/span><span class=\"s25\">20<\/span><span class=\"s25\">%) used credit cards for everyday <\/span><span class=\"s25\">living <\/span><span class=\"s25\">expenses<\/span><span class=\"s25\">; a similar number (18%) borrowed from friends <\/span><span class=\"s25\">or <\/span><span class=\"s25\">family<\/span><span class=\"s25\">;<\/span><span class=\"s25\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s25\">just over one in seven (<\/span><span class=\"s25\">15%<\/span><span class=\"s25\">)<\/span><span class=\"s25\"> regularly sold clothing\/toys\/other household items <\/span><span class=\"s25\">just <\/span><span class=\"s25\">to make ends meet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><span class=\"s25\">One in <\/span><span class=\"s25\">eight <\/span><span class=\"s25\">(1<\/span><span class=\"s25\">2<\/span><span class=\"s25\">%)<\/span> <span class=\"s25\">re<\/span><span class=\"s25\">s<\/span><span class=\"s25\">pondents <\/span><span class=\"s25\">admitted to having to <\/span><span class=\"s25\">go out to work<\/span><span class=\"s25\">, having not worked before their divorce,<\/span><span class=\"s25\"> or get a second job (10%)<\/span><span class=\"s25\">. Worr<\/span><span class=\"s25\">y<\/span><span class=\"s25\">ingly<\/span><span class=\"s25\">, <\/span><span class=\"s25\">one in eight<\/span><span class=\"s25\"> (1<\/span><span class=\"s25\">2<\/span><span class=\"s25\">%) <\/span><span class=\"s25\">also <\/span><span class=\"s25\">cut back, or cancelled, their pension contributions \u2013 putting their future retirement income <\/span><span class=\"s25\">further <\/span><span class=\"s25\">at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><strong><span class=\"s26\">Alistair McQueen, Head of Savings &amp; Retirement at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aviva.co.uk\/retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aviva<\/a>\u00a0said:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><span class=\"s27\">\u201c<em>The\u00a0breakdown of a marriage is often referred to one of the most traumatic and stressful events anyone can go through. Divorce can also be a costly <\/em><\/span><em><span class=\"s27\">experience<\/span><span class=\"s27\">,<\/span> <span class=\"s27\">often including <\/span><span class=\"s27\">legal fees, <\/span><span class=\"s27\">a <\/span><span class=\"s27\">new home, <\/span><span class=\"s27\">a <\/span><span class=\"s27\">new car<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> and new <\/span><span class=\"s27\">childcare<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> costs<\/span><span class=\"s27\">.<\/span> <span class=\"s27\">S<\/span><span class=\"s27\">o<\/span><span class=\"s27\">,<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> it\u2019s perhaps predictable that so many need to rely on savings or credit cards <\/span><span class=\"s27\">for\u00a0support<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> during this time.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><em><span class=\"s27\">\u201cIt\u2019s critical that, as part of the separation process, couples take time to think about and discuss <\/span><span class=\"s27\">one of <\/span><span class=\"s27\">their single most valuable asset<\/span><span class=\"s27\">s<\/span><span class=\"s27\">, their pen<\/span><span class=\"s27\">si<\/span><span class=\"s27\">on.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><em><span class=\"s27\">\u201cIt\u2019s common that one party will have significant pension provision, and the other party may have little or none. Clearly, this<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> could<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> be a relevant factor in any divorce. There are several options available to the <\/span><span class=\"s27\">Family <\/span><span class=\"s27\">court when dealing with pensions at divorce<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> \u2013 pension sharing, <\/span><span class=\"s27\">earmarking<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> and offsetting against other assets<\/span><span class=\"s28\">5<\/span><span class=\"s27\">. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"s24\"><em><span class=\"s27\">\u201cIt can often be a very complex issue<\/span> <span class=\"s27\">so<\/span><span class=\"s27\">,<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> as well as hiring a <\/span><span class=\"s27\">family <\/span><span class=\"s27\">lawyer<\/span><span class=\"s27\">,<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> it would be<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> advisable for couples to <\/span><span class=\"s27\">contact a financial adviser to walk them through the<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> pension valuation and financial<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> process.<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> You mustn\u2019t underestimate the value of pensions<\/span><span class=\"s27\"> at this time.<\/span><span class=\"s27\">\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span
