{"id":180577,"date":"2022-05-25T13:59:21","date_gmt":"2022-05-25T13:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/blog\/?p=180577"},"modified":"2022-05-25T13:59:21","modified_gmt":"2022-05-25T13:59:21","slug":"raab-promises-to-put-victims-firmly-at-heart-of-justice-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/blog\/raab-promises-to-put-victims-firmly-at-heart-of-justice-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Raab promises to put victims \u2018firmly at heart of justice system\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.standard.co.uk\/2022\/05\/25\/00\/42012a6f66bd0d98e19f6335318694d2Y29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNjUzNDkwMzY4-2.26124347.jpg?width=1024&amp;auto=webp\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"main\">\n<div class=\"sc-lbOyJj cFwzvG\"><span class=\"sc-McAUB tIqIe\">T<\/span><\/p>\n<p>he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/government\">Government<\/a> has promised to put the \u201cneeds and voices\u201d of victims \u201cfirmly at the heart of the justice system\u201d with a series of legal reforms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Justice Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/dominic-raab\">Dominic Raab<\/a> is publishing draft legislation which could pave the way for the first victims\u2019 law in a bid to provide better support and increase the conviction rate.<\/p>\n<p>In an overhaul of the current provisions, prosecutors will be told they need to meet victims in certain cases before a trial to hear their views.<\/p>\n<p>There will be also be a 20% increase in the victim surcharge penalty fee paid by convicted criminals when sentenced. We\u2019re amplifying victims\u2019 voices, boosting their rights at every stage and making criminals pay more to help victims recover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re doing this because it is morally the right thing to do to strengthen the care for victims, but also because it is operationally critical to drive up convictions \u2013 and keep our streets safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), there will also be \u201cgreater accountability\u201d on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/topic\/crown-prosecution-service\">Crown Prosecution Service<\/a> and the police, with victims given \u201cclearer routes of redress if they do not receive the support they are entitled to\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Victims will be given the right to attend Parole Board hearings in full and ask questions during the process which considers whether prisoners are suitable for release. Judges presiding over the reviews will be required to consider the victims\u2019 views and concerns before making a decision.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-hlnMnd fYSYCq\">\n<p>This is a once in a generation opportunity to drive real culture change, requiring agencies to see, hear and help victims \u2013 if necessary, with real consequences if this does not happen<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Under the proposals, ministers will be able to order criminal justice watchdogs to carry out regular inspections on victims\u2019 issues.
