However, YourTango Expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/experts\/meriarnett-kremian\">Meri Arnett-Kremian<\/a> is skeptical, explaining &#8220;I&#8217;m suspicious of the bias of his interviewees since they were talking about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/heartbreak\/when-your-marriage-fails-three-choices\">the breakup of their marriages<\/a>\u2014which presumptively were unhappy or they&#8217;d still be together. How are we defining happy?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Scientific Reasons Why Most Marriages Fail\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U8xsEaocWh0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Experts also had bad news for divorc\u00e9es: 58% agree that a divorcee&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/heartbreak\/marriage-statistics-predict-failed-marriage\">chances of getting divorced<\/a> are higher than someone who has never been married.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another indication a marriage will fail? Cold feet.<\/p>\n<p>Consistent with the results of a\u00a0UCLA study, a whopping 80% say that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/heartbreak\/life-altering-lessons-calling-off-wedding-taught-about-love\">a bride&#8217;s pre-wedding doubts<\/a> are a harbinger of divorce, about which YourTango Expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/experts\/drheitler\">Dr. Susan Heitler<\/a> explains, &#8220;Not all doubts prove predictive, but often something that looks problematic at the outset gets worse over time.&#8221; Meanwhile, perhaps surprisingly, 86% of experts agree prenups have no predictable impact on a couple\u2019s likelihood to divorce.<\/p>\n<section id=\"block-yt-ads-yt-ads-atf\" class=\"block block-yt-ads contextual-links-region clearfix\"\/>\n<p>Less surprisingly, 74% of experts polled agree that the number one predictor of divorce is differing values around kids, money, and\/or sex. Also, when asked whether divorce is harder on men or women, 65% of experts agree that &#8220;divorce is equally hard on everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, YourTango Expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/experts\/ninaatwood\">Nina Atwood<\/a> disagrees. She thinks divorce is more difficult for women because &#8220;Typically, women do not do as well financially post-divorce, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/heartbreak\/how-divorce-agreements-hurt-women\">so they have financial struggles<\/a> on top of the emotional ones.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A common dilemma for divorcing couples is whether to opt for litigation or mediation. According to the experts, the choice is clear. Seventy percent say opting for divorce mediation instead of divorce litigation ensures a smoother end to the marriage, and 65% agree that opting for divorce mediation instead of divorce litigation ensures a more equitable\/fair result.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-body-related-links\"><strong>RELATED:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/heartbreak\/fifty-percent-women-regret-part-relationship\">\u00a0Almost 50% Of Women Regret This Part Of Their Relationship<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<section id=\"block-yt-ads-yt-ads-atftop\" class=\"block block-yt-ads contextual-links-region clearfix\"\/>\n<p>Frequently, divorcing parents wonder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/experts\/ornaandmatthew\/mastering-dating-after-divorce-even-youd-rather-give\">how long to wait before starting to date again<\/a>. Fortunately for them, there is no right or wrong answer. Rather, a plurality of experts (37%) say that there&#8217;s no time requirement; as soon as they&#8217;d like is just fine.<\/p>\n<p>Another dilemma for divorcing parents is how much they should share with their kids about their divorce. About that, the majority of experts polled (51%) said &#8220;any details that the kids can developmentally understand and integrate&#8221; \u2014 no more and no less. Similarly, 70% of experts polled agree that divorcing parents should not ask their kids which parent they want to live with after the marriage ends because &#8220;the decision isn&#8217;t the kids to make and\/or it&#8217;s unfair to ask the kids to choose.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So, how can couples divorce-proof their marriages? 65% of experts agree the most effective way is by improving communication, followed by decreasing negativity\/criticism. Only about 4% cited more\/better sex.<\/p>\n<p>Your best bet? Be proactive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourtango.com\/love\/before-say-i-do-agree-i-donts\">before walking down the aisle.<\/a> Eighty percent of experts agree couples who attend premarital education\/counseling are less likely to get divorced than couples that don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully the men out there getting married will heed this message! However, couples therapy isn&#8217;t a cure-all. Rather, 65% of experts say that 25-50% of couples who attend couples therapy during their marriage end up getting divorced anyway.<\/li>\n<li>76% of experts polled say that of divorcing couples, most of the time one person\u2014not both\u2014wants the divorce.<\/li>\n<li>57% of experts say that less than 25% of divorces are amicable.
