The lawyer for a London police officer charged with sexual assault says his client hasn’t been convicted of anything and slammed the complainant and her lawyer for inferring he’s a public safety risk.<\/p>\n

London lawyer Glen Donald said Saturday that Const. Steve Williams, 41, who’s facing charges both in London and Waterloo Region, will have his cases decided by a judge — not the media.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo date, nothing at all has been proven,\u201d Donald told The Free Press.<\/p>\n

He was responding to a Free Press story based on an interview with the complainant in the London case. She criticized the London police for not naming Williams in a media release about the sexual assault charge involving her.<\/p>\n

The woman, 38, was a former girlfriend of Williams’. She said they met on the dating website Plenty of Fish 18 months ago. She said Williams told her he had several girlfriends.<\/p>\n

The charge stems from an alleged off-duty incident on Nov. 17, police say. A London police media release was sent out on Nov. 23 without identifying Williams. Police at the time said they were trying to protect the complainant\u2019s identity \u2013 a move she\u2019s now publicly criticizing.<\/p>\n

The complainant said Williams’ name needed to be out in the community \u201cfor other women to know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donald on Saturday criticized lawyer Phillip Millar, who formerly employed the complainant. Millar arranged for her to speak to the police.<\/p>\n

Millar, who attended the interview with the Free Press with the complainant, said Williams’ name should have been publicized by the police department because \u201cthe first priority has to go to protection of the public.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donald said he expects that all the decisions made in the case, including the one to withhold the police officer’s name, \u201cwould have focused on protection of the public.\u201d<\/p>\n

Donald, who has handled dozens of cases involving police officers charged with criminal offences, said he expects Williams’ case is being properly scrutinized.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn my experience, cases involving police officers are amongst the most vigorously prosecuted cases in this province and the public ought to have great confidence in the results (obtained) during the criminal justice process,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Williams has faith in the truth-seeking function of our system, and it is there, not through the media, where he will mount his defence to the allegations that have been made against him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with the London charge, Williams has been charged in Waterloo Region with two counts of criminal harassment, being unlawfully in a dwelling house and making a harassing phone call.<\/p>\n

The Crown in the London case requested a publication ban in the case that covers anything that might identify the complaint.<\/p>\n

Part of Williams’ release conditions state he is to stay away from her place of employment, a medical consulting group.<\/p>\n

The London police have said that it is not their practice to release the name of sexual assault victims or their accused if there is any chance the victim could be identified.<\/p>\n

Williams is not to be confused with London’s deputy police chief Steve Williams.<\/p>\n
