Divorce happens to tens of thousands of couples each year<\/a> in the UK. Yet when parents split up, there is one common mistake that can cause havoc for those with children.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to Georgina McCluskey, solicitor at Ribet Myles,<\/a> one of the biggest blunders she sees is when parents try to \u201cerase\u201d the other parent from their child\u2019s lives \u2013 whether inadvertently or not.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Some of the signs of this include: removing family photos from around the home, not engaging much with the other parent, and bad-mouthing them in front of their child.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThis can cause further distress to your children, who will inevitably be struggling with your separation,\u201d she told HuffPost UK.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As hard as it is to split from someone \u2013 especially if they\u2019ve done something hurtful, like cheating \u2013 your children shouldn\u2019t have to choose between you and their other parent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Nor should they have to be dragged into the drama.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important to remember they are still the mother or father of your children and will remain, aside from yourself, the most important person in their lives,\u201d said McCluskey. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cConsistency in family life, collaborative co-parenting and respect for the other parent, can help mitigate the emotional impact a divorce has on your children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

How to win at co-parenting<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Here, the solicitor has shared some ways to nail co-parenting (although she notes these won\u2019t be suitable in situations where there are allegations of abuse):<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

  • Be friendly at handovers and, if possible, go to the door\/pop in for a quick chat. Don\u2019t sit in your car and let the children get out on their own.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Let children keep family photos of the other parent in their room, or in the house (if you\u2019re comfortable with that).<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Support your child\u2019s relationship with the other parent \u2013 be positive about their time together and make it safe for children to discuss this with you.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Don\u2019t \u201cinterrogate\u201d children about their time with the other parent.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Avoid spats over the smaller things like forgetting the PE kit \u2013 keep spare essential items at both houses. It is important for both parents\u2019 houses to feel like home. <\/span><\/li>\n
  • Always speak positively about the other parent, and never bad mouth them, especially when children can hear. It\u2019s OK to say positive things about them and is helpful for children to hear this \u2013 it doesn\u2019t weaken your divorce case.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • If struggling, co-parenting apps can help to achieve amicable\/constructive communications. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n\n
