One in 10 did not even last five years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In contrast, fewer than 17 per cent of couples who married in 2013 were divorced 10 years later. And just 8 per cent who tied the knot in 1963 had split after a decade.<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"xp-iframe-mcrprt9uityths35o6p\" class=\"iframe-creator \" style=\"border: 0; width: 0; min-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/html_modules\/2025\/07_JUL\/250702_chances_of_divorce\/chances_of_divorce.html\" name=\"xp-iframe-mcrprt9uityths35o6p\" height=\"300\" scrolling=\"no\" data-xpmodule-iframe-resizable=\"\">Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">ONS data also shows there&#8217;s truth behind the &#8216;five-year fizzle&#8217; and &#8216;seven-year itch&#8217; theories \u2013 notoriously turbulent periods of marriage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Divorces most frequently occur within this window, MailOnline found after analysing 40 years of data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Over the last decade, 183,411\u00a0wedded couples (16\u00a0per cent) had split after being together for five to seven years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Divorces after 30 years were, in fact, more common. However, the ONS did not state the exact years in which they happened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">US-based couples therapist Gina Guddat <span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">said: &#8216;The five-to-seven-year mark is often when couples hit a major bump in the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"xp-iframe-mcrps1nw67tryf0hn54\" class=\"iframe-creator \" style=\"border: 0; width: 0; min-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/24045505\/embed\" name=\"xp-iframe-mcrps1nw67tryf0hn54\" height=\"520\">Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div id=\"mol-12588730-57ee-11f0-80bf-31a14db3ce2d\" class=\"art-ins mol-factbox floatRHS femail\" data-version=\"2\" data-permabox-url=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/article-14868925\/Divorce-rates-marriage-year-revealed-search-tool.html\">\n<h3 class=\"mol-factbox-title\">Proof the five or seven year itch IS real!<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ins cleared mol-factbox-body\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Most common endpoint of marriages, by year of divorce<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">2014: FIVE (5.8 per cent)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">2015: FIVE (5.8 per cent)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">2016: FIVE (5.8 per cent)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">2017: FIVE (6 per cent)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">2018: SIX (5.7 per cent)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">2019: SEVEN (5.7 per cent)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">2020: SIX (5.7 per cent)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">2021: EIGHT (5.6 per cent)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">2022: SEVEN\u00a0(5.3 per cent)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">2023: SIX (5.4 per cent)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&#8216;By that point many have had children, and the love and respect they once shared can start to wear down.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Many couples divorce at the seven-year point, but that isn\u2019t the only risk point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;It also happens at year 14, year 21, and around year 28 as their children gain more independence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;By year 28, they may be looking towards retirement and thinking they don\u2019t want to spend all their time with their partner.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In the 1980s, divorce rates peaked after three years of marriage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Over time, however, the itch has started to occur later and later in relationships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">For example, the eight-year mark proved the most common breaking point for divorces filed in 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Angela Vossen, founder of Sextasy, described as London&#8217;s only sex and relationship coaching practice, told MailOnline that while the itches are very real and perfectly common, they don&#8217;t have to present a significant problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She said: &#8216;Couples can navigate these periods through open communication, shared activities, addressing stressors and prioritising intimacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Some couples maintain and increase satisfaction over time with intentional effort.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"xp-iframe-mcrplyw471rxc0047ju\" class=\"iframe-creator \" style=\"border: 0; width: 0; min-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/24045434\/embed\" name=\"xp-iframe-mcrplyw471rxc0047ju\" height=\"620\" scrolling=\"no\" data-xpmodule-iframe-resizable=\"\">Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Relationship coach Shelley Whitehead told MailOnline that the trend of short-lived marriages could be down to how people date and plan their lives together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">She said: &#8216;I&#8217;ve earned the nickname &#8216;The Queen of Go Slow&#8217; &#8211; individuals and couples should slow down and really explore if values and standards are compatible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Do they both have the willingness to do the work when love becomes less about butterflies and more about real life decisions?
