With artificial intelligence creeping into our lives more and more, it\u2019s understandable that people are turning to it for legal advice.<\/p>\n

Just ask Kim Kardashian.<\/p>\n

But just like Kim Kardashian\u2019s experience<\/a>, the results aren\u2019t always accurate.<\/p>\n

Most people who are leaning on ChatGPT are doing it as a cost measure because, let\u2019s face it, getting divorced isn\u2019t cheap.<\/p>\n

However, Ron Shulman, managing partner at Shulman & Partners LLP, warned that relying on AI could end up costing aspiring divorcess \u201ca lot more\u201d in the long-run.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re now seeing clients who suddenly are challenging family lawyers and telling them how to present or defend an issue \u2014 and that information is coming from AI,\u201d Shulman explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll our lawyers are seeing this emerging trend,\u201d he continued, adding that the calls, emails and texts they are getting from clients has become frustrating.<\/p>\n

AI comes at a cost<\/h3>\n

With the information based on AI being sent to his lawyers \u2014 described as \u201cmostly inaccurate\u201d \u2014 Shulman noted it can become stressful for everyone involved, including clients when anxiety is already running high.<\/p>\n

The oft-unreliable information overload one gets from ChatGPT can make a person question their lawyer and any legal advice they\u2019ve received, not to mention making the divorce and separation process all the more taxing when it doesn\u2019t need to be.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor people going through a separation, the information from AI is driving them crazy,\u201d Shulman explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can have a negative impact on them psychologically,\u201d reiterating its accuracy but also how AI is not only trained to agree with you but also trained to say what a user wants to hear \u2014 meaning ChatGPT will match, not challenge, your beliefs.<\/p>\n

What to watch out for<\/h3>\n

Shulman acknowledged that AI can certainly be helpful, but it\u2019s when instances need more specificity that things can quickly go awry.<\/p>\n

And while questions can start off as exploratory, the advice one gets back can range from contradictory to inconsistent to just plain wrong.<\/p>\n

That said, Shulman is well aware that with the growing popularity of AI, people are going to turn to it no matter what.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s one piece of advice I can give to clients on the use of ChatGPT, it\u2019s to be very careful,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s most likely inaccurate and it may store your information \u2014 so personal information may be exposed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shulman added: \u201cAny interaction with our lawyers is always confidential and your privacy is protected. That may not be the case with AI.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
