top: -1.4em; padding: 0; overflow: hidden; width: 100%; margin: 0; clear: both; } ]]><\/style>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-consumers-to-bear-the-burden\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consumers to bear the burden<\/h2>\n<p>But, the move would drain UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/three-things-business-needs-from-a-uk-china-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">goods importers\u2019 pockets<\/a>, forcing consumers to take on the burden in some instances.<\/p>\n<p>According to research by the BCC Insight Unit, half of importers admitted that if their import costs increased by five to ten per cent on small shipments, they would have to pass on the costs to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Just 20 per cent said they would be able to absorb them.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"read-more read-more--has-media read-more-auto\">\n<div class=\"read-more__content\">\n<h5 class=\"read-more__label\">Read more<\/h5>\n<h4 class=\"read-more__title\"><a class=\"read-more__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/diageo-burberry-rally-after-trump-tariff-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Diageo, Burberry rally after Trump tariff ruling<\/a><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Meanwhile, nearly a quarter said an increase in costs by ten to 15 per cent due to the removal of other countries \u2018de minimis\u2019 exemptions, would put more than half of their overseas sales at risk.<\/p>\n<p>Others would be forced to switch supplier, consolidate shipments or scale down activity, which could ultimately reduce overall trade volumes.<\/p>\n<p>A government consultation into the plans closed 6 March, with the BCC responding that while the UK must respond to actions taken by the EU and US, reforms must be proportionate.<\/p>\n<p>Reforms must also align with the international response and focus on enforcement rather than blunt cost increases the trade body urged.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-urging-ministers\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Urging ministers<\/h2>\n<p>William Bain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/firms-warned-to-make-contingency-plans-amid-6bn-tariff-hit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">head of trade policy<\/a> at the British Chambers of Commerce, said: \u201cE\u2011commerce matters\u00a0greatly to\u00a0the UK economy and global trade.
