It also has the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloombergquint.com\/business\/2018\/03\/27\/global-haven-for-quick-online-divorces-tries-to-slow-things-down\"><br \/>\n  highest divorce rate in western Europe<\/a>: Nearly half of all<br \/>\n  marriages ended in divorce as of 2017.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  One reason for the relatively high divorce rate might be that<br \/>\n  splitting up in Denmark is a relatively seamless process.<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/29\/world\/europe\/denmark-online-divorce.html\"><br \/>\n  The New York Times reported<\/a> that couples can complete an<br \/>\n  online form, pay a $60 fee, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statsforvaltningen.dk\/site.aspx?p=6388\">get a<br \/>\n  divorce<\/a> in less than a week.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Yet according to The Times, all that could change next year, when<br \/>\n  new rules around the divorce process are set to go into effect.<br \/>\n  Couples who have children and want to dissolve their marriage<br \/>\n  will now be required to take a three-month \u201creflection period\u201d<br \/>\n  and get free counseling before they\u2019re granted a divorce. The<br \/>\n  goal is to protect children, who will also receive counseling<br \/>\n  during this time.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  As for couples without kids \u2014 and in cases of abuse \u2014 a speedier<br \/>\n  divorce will still be possible.\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/drksmerling.com\/\">Kathryn Smerling<\/a>, a New<br \/>\n  York City-based psychotherapist who helps couples going through<br \/>\n  divorce, told Business Insider that Denmark\u2019s current divorce<br \/>\n  process is \u201cabsolutely an anathema towards emotional wellbeing<br \/>\n  and health.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  On the other hand, \u201cthe idea of a three-month reflection period<br \/>\n  is actually a wonderful idea when there are children involved,\u201d<br \/>\n  Smerling added.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  \u201cMarriage and families are not disposable. You do need time to<br \/>\n  think about how you\u2019re going to deal with the children, how<br \/>\n  you\u2019re going to tell the children, how are the children going to<br \/>\n  live with both [parents] if they\u2019re going to do that.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<h2>\n  Divorce in the US is often much more complicated<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n  In the US, divorce is typically a much lengthier and more<br \/>\n  expensive process. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobankingrates.com\/saving-money\/best-worst-states-low-cost-divorce\/\"><br \/>\n  average divorce filing fee<\/a> is $215; the average divorce<br \/>\n  attorney\u2019s fees are $10,180. (One lawyer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/january-is-divorce-month-are-you-next-2017-1\"><br \/>\n  previously told Business Insider<\/a> that a divorce in Manhattan<br \/>\n  can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Smerling said she has couples in her practice who have been<br \/>\n  trying to get divorced for half a decade, held up by things like<br \/>\n  delayed court dates.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  But as INSIDER\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisisinsider.com\/filing-for-divorce-online-2018-1\">Louis<br \/>\n  Baragona reported<\/a>, celebrity-divorce lawyer Laura Wasser<br \/>\n  recently launched a website that gives couples the tools to get<br \/>\n  divorced online. The site, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itsovereasy.com\/\">It\u2019s Over Easy<\/a>, is only<br \/>\n  available to couples in California and New York, and the cost of<br \/>\n  the process starts at $750.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Smerling said divorce is a completely different story for couples<br \/>\n  with and without kids.
