For my parents, the spark went out after 18 years of marriage. But just because they\u2019re not \u201ctogether\u201d doesn\u2019t mean they can never be together in the same room. Sure, my parents get on each other\u2019s nerves on occasion, but they still consider themselves friends at the end of the day.<\/p>\n

Over the years, I\u2019ve seen what makes their friendship work\u00a0(and what doesn\u2019t). My divorced parents are just one example of a former couple who still gets along well \u2014 plenty of celebrity couples have also made a\u00a0relationship<\/span> with ex a real possibility\u00a0after divorce<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n

As difficult as it may seem when ending a marriage, \u200bit is<\/em> possible to\u00a0<\/span>divorce <\/span>gracefully and carry on a friendship with an ex.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Read on to find out some valuable insight and advice for how to maintain a friendship after divorce, as told by a child of divorce,\u00a0who witnessed\u00a0it firsthand.<\/p>\n\n

1. Give\u00a0each other the space you need.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since my parents are still close, they find themselves crossing paths fairly often. Still, with any friendship, there\u2019s a limit to how much time they can spend together while staying sane. Everybody needs their space, after all.<\/p>\n

With my parents, when an argument is about to happen or negative feelings are brewing, one of them will usually say \u201cI\u2019m leaving!\u201d or \u201cGet out!\u201d This may seem harsh, but it\u2019s much better than dragging out an argument and having them both get heated.<\/p>\n

If one of them just leaves the situation for a while, they both have the space they need to cool down, and they return to what they were doing sooner than if they were both screaming at each other at the top of their lungs.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, this arrangement allows both of my parents to keep their emotions (and blood pressures) at appropriate levels. Any former couple who still interacts regularly should prioritize their emotional well-being over their ego. Knowing when to walk away and give another person space is a necessary skill for any friendship.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Check in on each other, like any concerned friend would.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

When one of my parents is sick, the other will drop everything to care for them when necessary. Even when one continues to say \u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d the other can tell when they\u2019re not, and will force them to take the necessary steps to get well again.<\/p>\n

Everyone would be lucky to have such a caring friend (or multiple) in their lives. Sometimes all we need is someone to check up on us, and I\u2019m glad my parents can still fill that role for each other.<\/p>\n

For couples in the midst of marital trouble, being able to support one another is respectable and admirable.<\/p>\n
