The house shared by the Prince and Princess of Wales after their marriage was so \u201csmall\u201d and \u201cuncomfortable\u201d it may have helped stir tensions in the household, according to a member of the staff who worked there at the time. Royal author Sarah Bradford reported in her book \u2018Diana\u2019 the shocking claim, adding the so-called \u2018KP\u2019, how Kensington Palace is also known, \u201cwas less a home than a prison\u201d for the Princess of Wales. In the book, one member of the staff said: \u201cIt was a small apartment, it needed to be bigger really.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cThey had a sitting room and a study each, then a drawing room, then a dining room and that was it really, as far as reception rooms went.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot a lot of corridor space, so it wasn\u2019t very comfortable.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey needed a second reception room downstairs so that upstairs would be private, but the way it was it was all in together.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey should have moved initially to somewhere bigger\u2026\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cThey were far too important to be in such a small apartment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the apartment contributed to certain tensions, they were on top of another as regards what they were supposed to be doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
This feeling of oppression and smallness was confirmed also by Patrick Jephson, Princess Diana<\/a> private secretary from 1988 to 1996, who was \u201csurprised to find the apartment smaller and gloomier than he had expected\u201d, according to Ms Bradford.<\/p>\n The author said in her book there was \u201cvirtually no privacy\u201d in Kensington Palace, with Mr Jephson adding: \u201cEverybody could hear everybody else.\u00a0<\/p>\n READ MORE: Princess Diana: Real reason Prince Charles ‘RUSHED’ to marry Diana – REVEALED<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cIf you needed to get away from someone there was just not enough space.\u201d<\/p>\n Princess Diana and Prince Charles<\/a> lived together at apartments 8 and 9 in Kensington Palace between 1981 and 1996, when they divorced.<\/p>\n The Princess of Wales remained in the house where the couple brought up their sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, until her sudden death in 1997.<\/p>\n Her neighbour at number 10 was Princess Margaret, who reportedly never forgave Diana for revealing to the world her relationship troubles with Charles in the shocking interview given to BBC Panorama in 1995.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Then, Diana famously said there were \u201cthree people\u201d in her marriage, hinting at Charles\u2019s affair with Camilla<\/a> Parker Bowles.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n Today the palace serves two purposes, it is both a museum open to the public and the official residence to some royals, including Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William.<\/p>\n
