{"id":75843,"date":"2019-05-28T21:09:47","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T21:09:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/blog\/?p=75843"},"modified":"2019-05-30T23:13:08","modified_gmt":"2019-05-30T23:13:08","slug":"government-should-spend-funds-supporting-marriage-not-changing-divorce-laws-in-ireland-says-bisho","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dominiclevent.com\/blog\/government-should-spend-funds-supporting-marriage-not-changing-divorce-laws-in-ireland-says-bisho\/","title":{"rendered":"Government should spend funds supporting marriage &#8211; not changing divorce laws in Ireland, says Bisho&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p>The Government should spend funds supporting marriage instead of changing divorce law, Ireland\u2019s Catholic Church leaders said on Saturday..<\/p>\n<p>The country must work together to promote marriage and family, leading Church member Bishop Denis Nulty said.<\/p>\n<p>This Friday, May 24, the country will go to the polls to vote in a divorce referendum.<\/p>\n<p>Currently under the Constitution, a person must be separated for four of the previous five years in order to apply for a divorce.<\/p>\n<p>A Yes vote on Friday would mean that the Oireachtas would be able to bring in legislation that would determine the time a couple needs to be apart before they can get divorced.<\/p>\n<p>The Government has indicated it would shorten the period to two years.<\/p>\n<p>A yes vote would also allow the Oireachtas to legislate for the recognition of foreign divorces.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"in-article-image\" data-mod=\"image\" itemprop=\"image\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><meta itemprop=\"url\" content=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.irishmirror.ie\/news\/irish-news\/article16165617.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/0_I190518_152631_2038342oTextTRMRMMGLPICT000147672554o.jpg\"\/><meta itemprop=\"width\" content=\"615\"\/><meta itemprop=\"height\" content=\"590\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"outer\">\n<div class=\"mod-image\">\n<img data-src=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.irishmirror.ie\/news\/irish-news\/article16165617.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/0_I190518_152631_2038342oTextTRMRMMGLPICT000147672554o.jpg\" alt=\"\" content=\"https:\/\/i2-prod.irishmirror.ie\/news\/irish-news\/article16165617.ece\/ALTERNATES\/s615b\/0_I190518_152631_2038342oTextTRMRMMGLPICT000147672554o.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption><span class=\"caption\" itemprop=\"description\">Bishop Denis McNulty<\/span><br \/>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"read-more-links\">\n<h5 class=\"publication-theme-icon publication-theme-border\">Read More<\/h5>\n<\/aside>\n<p> \u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>But stable marriages and relationships contribute \u201csignificantly\u201d to a happy and stable society, Bishop Nulty said yesterday, as part of the official statement from the Irish Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference (ICBC) on the upcoming referendum.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the ICBC\u2019s Council for Marriage and the Family, which he chairs, said he recognises that married couples face a number of challenges in modern society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarriage is essential and fundamental for the good of society worldwide. It is imperative that we continue to work together to promote marriage and family,\u201d said Bishop Nulty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe objective of the proposed referendum is not to support marriage, rather to liberalise divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Government should provide support for couples so that they can stay married, rather than plowing public funds into a referendum that would \u201cexpedite\u201d the end of marriages, he said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"read-more-links\">\n<h5 class=\"publication-theme-icon publication-theme-border\">Read More<\/h5>\n<\/aside>\n<p> \u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe common good would be better served by supporting and resourcing couples and families in preparation for, and during marriage,\u201d said Bishop Nulty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that the incidence of marriage breakdown and divorce could be reduced through the introduction of socio-economic policies which support the family and through long-term education strategies which promote values such as fidelity and commitment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile this would cost money, the human and economic cost of breakdown and divorce, both for the couple and for their children, is a far greater cost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government should recommit resources to marriage preparation and invest resources into marriage enrichment.
