WASHINGTON, April 28, 2017 – The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals has put a hold on litigation over the Clean Power Plan while it considers whether to send the matter back to the Environmental Protection Agency. The court granted the Trump administration’s motion to hold in abeyance the consolidated cases before it, which were the subject of a full day of oral arguments last fall. The court, which had been expected to issue a decision soon, instead suspended proceedings for 60 days and ordered the parties to file supplemental briefs by May 15 on whether to remand the matter to EPA. “We welcome this news from […]

Bill Pesch, For PDN 4:07 p.m. ChT April 30, 2017 Pesch(Photo: PDN file photo) As I near the end of my series on family-related laws passed by the 33rd Guam Legislature, I turn my attention to statute that’s received tremendous public attention since its passage in September 2016 — Public Law 33-187. This law removed the statute of limitations for acts of sexual assault and allowed long ago sexual assault victims to sue both the abuser and those institutions that failed to stop the abuse. Since the law passed, more than 50 people have filed lawsuits against the Catholic Church. […]

A man took a dental firm to court after he claims the veneers he paid nearly £300 for were like ‘joke shop teeth’. Sean Porter visited Instasmile in Leigh in July 2016 as he wanted a set of veneers to cover up a baby tooth. At the firm he got a 3D scan of his mouth so a specially made mould could be manufactured. However what he got were veneers, that he says, didn’t fit in his mouth. As a result Sean decided to take the company to court to get a refund – and was awarded the £299 price […]

Quote of the week Trinidad’s indicted Jack Warner – reacting to Concacaf suing him and his former Trump Tower neighbour Chuck Blazer for $20m by countersuing for $40m. Warner says his defamation case will end “the atrocities perpetrated against me by men of the lower ilk … The time has come. $40m it will be. Double theirs!” • Jack’s previous best court plan: 2012 – a pledge to sue for defamation over “damn foolish” press talk of an FBI inquiry: “I will sue to the high heavens … It will be court after court after court.” Also back in the […]

The five stages of letting my child go away. Far away. Like, multiple states away. Where I can’t be there to console, rescue, and/or feed him in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve always loved to travel. I love seeing and experiencing new places and have always taken every opportunity to go just about anywhere. And I was never picky about who chaperoned or how I got there. I was happy to hitch a ride with one of my numerous aunts and uncles, even offering childcare in return for room and board — one of the benefits of having 4,108 […]

Our house is bright orange, you can’t miss it,” says 69-year-old Juan Mejia as he paces up and down his driveway in Los Angeles County, wearing a salmon-colored polo shirt with khakis. He’s on the phone, giving directions to friends who will be joining him and his wife Carolina for a small, informal gathering to talk about the anti-immigrant climate in the United States — and what they can do to prepare for a worst-case scenario. Carolina adjusts her glasses under her short, curly black hair, and brushes her apron as she walks around the backyard making sure there are enough […]

When the downtown Macon Health Club closes its doors Saturday afternoon, it’s unclear if it will ever reopen. Macon Health Club Inc., the former owner of the club, sought to lease the space after the current operator, The Medical Center, Navicent Health, announced plans to close the facility last year. Located on the corner of First and Cherry streets, the facility first opened in 1908 as a YMCA. The Medical Center filed suit earlier this year, asking a judge to decide whether the hospital is still bound by terms of a 1991 agreement signed by the hospital when it took […]
