Leigh Day: Junior solicitor 'massively regrets' destroying document
A solicitor at human rights firm Leigh Day destroyed an important document one day before investigators were due to inspect files, the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal heard today. Anna Crowther had identified the significance of an Arabic document and its handwritten translation after a disclosure request from the Al-Sweady inquiry into claims made against the Ministry of Defence. The ex-wife of a Russian oligarch has filed a lawsuit demanding $15billion from her former husband, it is reported. Natalia Potanina, 55, is seeking half of 56-year-old Vladimir Potanin’s wealth, including dividends from a lucrative Russian firm, Forbes Russia reports. If Ms Potanina’s claim is successful, the settlement will be more than three times larger than the current record, estimated to be $4billion paid by Alec Wildenstein in his 1999 divorce from wife Jocelyn. Criminal defence practitioners will be victims of a ‘postcode lottery’ on whether they will be made to work longer days for no additional pay under plans to extend court opening hours, the Law Society warned today. HM Courts & Tribunals Service proposes to run six-month pilots at Newcastle and Blackfriars crown courts, Sheffield and Highbury Corner magistrates’ courts, Brentford County Court and Manchester Civil Justice Centre. Estranged couples who run up fortunes in lawyers’ bills when fighting over money in divorce courts are not necessarily profligate, a specialist lawyer has suggested.
