From showbiz wedding to quickie divorce: Louise and Jamie Redknapp’s love story
After 19 years of marriage Jamie and Louise Redknapp were granted a quickie divorce in a hearing that lasted just 25 seconds.
Court documents cited former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp’s “unreasonable behaviour” as the reason for the split.
The showbiz couple – who tied the knot in 1998 – were granted a decree nisi at the Central Family Court in London, just hours after Louise was seen partying at a friend’s wedding in Liverpool.
Mum-of-two Louise confirmed the couple were living apart back in October, as she spent months on the road performing in a touring stage show.
Having been granted a decree nisi, the pair can be issued with a decree absolute to end their marriage in six weeks, if no objections are formally made.
Jamie and Louise, who have two sons, Charley, 13, and Beau, nine, had previously quashed any rumours that their marriage was on the rocks, insisting they were “great”.
Nearly 20 years after they promised to love one another forever, it’s clear things were far-from-perfect for the celebrity couple.
We took a look back on the power couple’s relationship, from beginning to end.
The first meeting
Jamie and Louise met through mutual friend Robbie Williams when Louise was on tour with Eternal, who were supporting Take That.
However, the pop star insisted the pair take things slow, and they started out as friends.
Louise told The Times : “He was a young, good-looking footballer. I wasn’t stupid and that’s most probably why I didn’t go out with him for so long.”
Tropical showbiz beach wedding
The pair had a whirlwind holiday wedding in June 1998, tying the knot in a low-key, private ceremony.
Jamie proposed to Louise in Bermuda and they married on the beach within a week.
Louise, who was 23 when the couple married, told the Daily Mail neither of them wanted a “big, glitzy wedding” and they opted for a small, private affair.
Giving up work to raise her children
By 2004, men’s mag FHM had labelled her the sexiest woman of the decade. But at her peak she discovered she was pregnant and slowly stepped back from her career.
She gave birth to the couple’s first son Charley in 2004, before welcoming second child Beau in 2008.
While Louise focused on raising a family, Jamie’s career skyrocketed – first as a footballer at the top of his game and later as a pundit.
For the past seven years, he’s also been starring in sports panel show A League of Their Own with Freddie Flintoff and James Corden – as well as two spin-off series with them on a US road trip.
Speaking to Women’s Health , Louise said: “I wouldn’t give up my time away from the limelight for all the money in the world. But it is hard when you’re married to someone with a very successful career, and you have children, to have everything.
“Something has to give somewhere, and I think it was me that gave. You get comfortable and you stop chasing the dream a little bit.”
Being a stay-at-home mum didn’t always come naturally to Louise, who admitted feeling dissatisfied by her “dream” WAG life.
In a candid interview in Stella magazine, Louise said: “People might look at me and think I’ve got everything, but a sweeping staircase and designer handbag doesn’t really do it for me.”
Louise wants a third baby
With two boys to look after, Louise revealed she was thinking of adding to their family back in 2015 – admitting she wanted a daughter
She told The Express : “I know how close I am to my mum. I’ll always be close to my boys but it’s a boys’ club and I can feel a bit left out.”
At 40, she knew time might not be on her side for another addition to the Redknapp family: “I would be lying if I said I didn’t have those days where I think it would be nice. It’s hard to rule it out when you reach an age when you know you have to make a decision.
“I am on a short time span. I need to do it quickly if I’m going to do it. I’m fully aware that I don’t have years to wait.”
Getting her independence back with Strictly Come Dancing
After years out of the limelight, Louise decided it was time to do something for herself by agreeing to join Strictly last year.
The mum-of-two said she could feel herself changing “week by week” and that her stint on the show helped her get her body confidence back.
During her first appearance on Strictly, Louise chose to wear a long dress that swallowed her figure and stand at the back, but that changed when fellow contestant Daisy Lowe encouraged to show off her “gorgeous body”.
Speaking to Stella magazine she said: “[Daisy] kept on at me to wear something sexy and by week three I was in a leotard and tights not feeling self-conscious at all. I could feel myself changing week by week.”
After getting her mojo back on the show, Louise carried on enjoying her new lease of life – taking on a role in a touring production of Cabaret.
Louise admitted her time on the BBC show was life-changing and prompted her to re-evaluate her future.
Speaking to Stella magazine she said: “I have no idea what is going to happen, all I know is that I fought for this, it’s taken everything, but this is something I need to do – for me.”
Rumours of a marriage split
Louise Redknapp on This Morning
In a recent This Morning appearance , Louise was grilled by Eamonn Holmes on the truth of the split rumours and she said it had “been well documented” in the media and went on to say that she was focusing on her children.
However, she refused to explicitly state that they had split.
Eamonn said: “Of course, everyone’s talking about you and speculating about your life and you and Jamie, Where are you at? What’s the situation?”
Louise replied: “I think that it’s been so heavily documented and of course we all go through hard times and my priority and his priority is our children and protecting them and keeping as much private as possible and loving them and putting them first. That’s really what we’re focusing on.”
She also said that work had been a real “saviour” during this time and hinted that Strictly might have prompted the split.
Louise and Jamie divorce
Louise leaving Hilton
After 19 years of marriage, Louise and Jamie Redknapp have been given permission to divorce by a judge in less than a minute.
A hearing at the Central Family Court in London formally began their legal split.
Paperwork showed that Mrs Redknapp had filed for divorce and said the marriage had irretrievably broken down because of Mr Redknapp’s ‘’unreasonable behaviour’’.
Mr Redknapp did not seek to reject his wife’s divorce application.
Judge Mulkis held that Mr Redknapp had behaved in such a way that Mrs Redknapp could not ‘’reasonably be expected’’ to live with him.
He concluded that the marriage had ‘’broken down irretrievably’’.
However, Louise was pictured still wearing her wedding ring just minutes after being granted the quicky divorce.
She was spotted leaving the Hilton Hotel in Liverpool city centre, cutting a casual figure by pairing a red hoodie with a pair of ripped jeans, and appearing to attempt to cover the wedding ring on her hand with a long-sleeved leather jacket.
Also seen leaving the hotel was The Saturday’s Frankie Bridge after the pair had celebrated the wedding of Strictly coreographer Jason Gilkison and his partner James Carney at The Palmhouse in Sefton Park.
