With this reform, mediation has become an integrated feature of the civil justice system. In expanding the role of mediation as a form of alternative dispute resolution (ADR), the Ministry of Justice stated that it was guided by the ‘overarching principle’ of bringing the benefits of mediation to as many as possible.
