It’s been 14 years and I can still vividly remember times in the first year or two of my divorce when I felt like I just couldn’t cope. Something would happen—like someone would tell me they ran into my ex on a date, or I’d pick up my kids from school and see someone whispering about me, or I would get bills in the […]

Credit Suisse swung to a fourth-quarter loss of SFr353m ($393m) as coronavirus-related credit writedowns and provisions for litigation eroded modest gains in underlying performance at the bank. Write-offs related to underperforming loans and defaults tripled to SFr1.1bn, almost four times higher than the average level over the previous 11 years, the bank said on Thursday. Their licenses were invalidated last year by Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Carl […]

Alongside its huge health and societal impact, the coronavirus crisis is also reshaping our legal landscape. Responding to the pandemic has led to the creation of the most intrusive and stringent laws of modern times, affecting every aspect of our lives. Almost all of those laws made by the government over the past year have been as secondary legislation – that is, regulations made by ministers – rather than primary legislation, which is approved by the House of Commons and the House of Lords. Using secondary legislation is quite normal for technical measures or for filling in the detail of […]
